From the 1970s to the 1980s, it was common for contractors to apply Artex coatings to the ceilings and walls of new homes being built in the United Kingdom. The purpose of Artex coatings was to cover up any small flaws or discrepancies on these surfaces. It has a textured finish that covers them up nicely.
Unfortunately, property owners were not aware that asbestos was used to make Artex. It was the ingredient that gave Artex its strength. Nowadays, the public is aware of how dangerous it is to have asbestos in any materials of a home. But people back then did not have this information, so they just assumed that Artex was a powerful finish for homes and nothing more.
25 Years Experience
Artex coatings were used in so many properties throughout Glasgow that were built in those days. If your property was built between the 1970s and 1980s, then it probably has Artex coatings with asbestos in it too.
We’ll survey your home to see if asbestos is present. If we determine that your ceilings and walls are safe, even though traces of asbestos are present, then we’ll recommend that you plaster over those surfaces rather than try to remove them. We can provide local plastering services if that is the case. But if you would rather have the coating removed, then you must contact an air monitoring company with UKAS accreditation first.
Safe Plastering Over Artex Coatings
Whether the Artex coatings on your walls and ceiling contain asbestos or not, we can plaster over them safely. All of our customers in Glasgow should consider getting this service because it is much safer, faster, and cleaner than an Artex removal project.
If you were to request such a removal service, then it would involve having to scrape and strip the surfaces on your ceilings and walls. This is a risky procedure because the steam stripper emits moisture that could potentially damage the materials within your ceilings and walls. That would just create even more work for us to do.
A steam stripper may be used to test a tiny area of the surface. Then you would use a scraper to see how easily the Artex coating is removed. We don’t recommend you try this unless you have experience. Alternatively, you can hire our professionals to conduct an Artex test by using special removal chemicals.
If Artex cannot be physically removed from your property, then our professionals will just plaster over the surfaces of your ceilings and walls so that they’re in great condition again. A PVA coating is applied first prior to the plaster finishing in order to promote adhesion and prevent negative reactions. Virtually all flat surfaces, including stud partitioning, can be plastered over by us too.
